As we head into the summer months, it’s important to know some seasonal factors about DWI so you can be prepared and avoid an unexpected arrest this summer.
Statistics About Summer DWI
Numerous different researchers and organizations share the same consensus: incidents of DWI arrests and accidents increase during the summer months.
- About 50% of accidents on the Fourth of July involve alcohol.
- Most fatal DWI accidents occur during May, June, and July.
- June, July, and August are the deadliest months for underage DWI.
- About 30-40% of summer traffic deaths involve an intoxicated driver.
- Memorial Day marks the start of the 100 deadliest days for drivers.
Why Is There a Seasonal Increase?
There are a number of possible reasons for why more DWI accidents occur during the summer.
First, the summer holidays. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day all tend to lead to an increase in socializing and drinking over the long weekends. Many people host parties, restaurants and bars do special events and promotions, and in turn, there is a spike in binge drinking.
Second, schools are out. Teenagers and college students may engage in heavier drinking as they have more free time to do so. They may then get behind the wheel and become involved in an accident.
Third, the summer is a prime time to travel. The days are longer and the weather is nicer, encouraging more people to spend time outdoors, on the road, or doing activities that involve alcohol. This leads to a higher percentage of people traveling by car, a higher frequency of DWI, and a higher chance of DWI accidents occurring.
